Background

My motive for being a leader in the health and safety industry is to ensure that everyone goes home healthy and well after work, both in the short term and long term.  I aim to do this by ensuring that people are fit for work, and work is fit for people.

This motive stems from early study in exercise science, coupled with experiences gained participating in and leading emergency management teams.  Seeing the results of things that have gone wrong, have led me to want to try to reduce harm at work and home.  I believe a lot of people and businesses focus on ‘safety’, but there are still opportunities to understand, learn and do more for health and wellbeing.  This has driven my desire and passion to promote mental and physical wellbeing at work and in home life.

Over the past 21 years I have worked in maritime, railways, science, research and now construction industries.  This has allowed me to gain and develop skills and experiences in dynamic, high risk and heavily regulated industries that I can now utilise to help people and businesses implement simple, effective, and meaningful safety, health, wellbeing, and environmental management systems.

My leadership roles at work, sports and emergency services have taught me to be an effective leader and confident communicator.  Coupled with an inquisitive mind, and creative computer skills, this helps me to create resources, concepts and lead presentations that are informative, engaging, and professional, regardless of if they are for audits, investigations, or learning topics to individuals or groups.

My approach and work style are to take people and businesses on the journey built on trust, learning and honesty.  I see my role not as a health and safety advisor, but a mentor.  I aim to coach, guide, and encourage people to be leaders and owners of their health, wellbeing and safety.  Once that is achieved, they can then encourage and mentor others to do the same.

A single word and definition I have come across that I use to test my approach and advice is Integrity – doing what you know is right.
