Background

I have worked in Health and Safety since 1991 with a broad range of businesses. My role as an Occupational Health Nurse has been combined consultancy and advisory in health promotion and health and safety.

I have worked as a consultant within in my own businesses for 25 years with companies from one or two people to national organisations. I have represented Occupational Health Nurses at as Local and National President. I have represented NZOHNA on the HASANZ for 4 years , which is a national leadership group which is working to improve the quality and professionalism of health and safety advisors and consultants. 

My background has been “hands-on” health and safety experience in some challenging industries including mining, electrical and civil construction as well as local body and manufacturing. My special interest is in understanding the motivation required to prevent illness and injury. 

I have worked as a consultant for the Employers’ Association for 2 periods of 4 years where I had the opportunity to work with a huge number of businesses to assist in navigating the changes to the health and safety legislation. The role has been providing health and safety training and consultancy services, working with businesses from the board to the workers. The aim is always to mentor the business into self-management with a highly-engaged workforce.

I work for the University of Otago as the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Coordinator plus consulting as WHS Consulting providing services mainly in Dunedin and Central Otago. From project work, and training to assist workplaces to understand their risks in particular their health risks and what Healthy Work looks like.

Area of interest is in management, governance and health risk assessment while still providing a limited health monitoring service.
