Background

Karyn Byrom started her working life at Wellington Hospital initially as a darkroom technician in the Photography Department and latterly as a Medical Photographer in the Wellington Clinical School of Medicine.  The first ever photo she printed was of a pair of feet following a lawn mower accident, never at that time would she envisage how much safety would become part of her future career.

Moving to Nelson she took a change in career path working in both the electrical and mussel processing industry, the latter which brought her to work at Sealord - one of the largest fish quota holders in New Zealand.  During her 16 years at Sealord her interest in health and safety and the right for everyone to be safe developed further.  Initially she became a Health and Safety Representative and progressively moved up to a Health and Safety Advisor role for the Sealord fleet.

A few years ago, Karyn joined Darren Guard in his business at Guard Safety.  The business provides health and safety services for the maritime industry, while also providing land-based services.  The company business slogan is Complex Problems, Simple Solutions - the team mentor, train, review / audit and create or update systems to improve understanding by the shop floor up.

Karyn has undertaken a wide range of safety training courses over the years and has completed her Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety (Level 6).  She is a Graduate Member of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) and active in her role both at work and for others.  She is a committee member of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) Nelson branch, organises meetings and supports the New Zealand Fishing Safety Forum where industry leaders meet to discuss maritime safety and coordinates meetings and presentations for the Nelson Tasman Health and Safety Network.

Having been active in the health and safety sector for many years Karyn understands that health and safety needs practicality to achieve safe outcomes for all workers, their friends and families.
