I have worked as an Occupational Therapist exclusively in an industrial / workplace environment since 2012. Occupational Therapy and Health and Safety complement each other. I have a special interest in Health Ergonomics and this led to me include a level 8 paper in Heath Ergonomics when I undertook a Post Graduate Certificate in Health Science. This certificate also included papers in Vocational management and Rehabilitation. I have studied Pain Management and am trained in occupational health screening using spirometry, audiometry, drug and alcohol testing, cognitive performance, psychosocial functioning / mental health, musculoskeletal function and cardiac monitoring. A particular area of expertise is functional testing in relation to functional demands of particular roles and in the context of pre employment checks and the ageing workforce. I believe that the right person in the right job can prevent injury and enhance safety whilst increasing productivity and reducing staff turnover.
Feedback from a wide range of industries indicates that my communication style, collaborative approach, common sense and ability to problem solve are amongst my strengths.
Being based in the top of the south, it is inevitable that I am experienced in primary production such as farming, viticulture, seafood and local industry. My broad work history has prepared me well for my current job where I could be on a mussel barge one day and in administrative offices the next. Some of my previous jobs are; research chemist, horticulture worker, teacher, smallholder, carpenter, joiner and a few short term jobs including grave digger. Consequently I feel at home in most workplaces and I am interested in all of them.
My experience in vocational rehab (after injury) along with study and interest in Ergonomics has assisted me to help employers and employees to work out their own ways to prevent injury. As part of my role as an occupational therapist I carry out risk assessments for clients presenting with unpredictable behaviour and mental health issues in the workplace.
My Vocational Rehabilitation experience and broad work experience has enabled me to assist in reducing lost time at work due to pain, discomfort, injury, medical conditions, mental health issues and ageing. I achieve the latter through work-related assessment, specific interventions, workplace accommodations and the design and monitoring of tailor-made Graduated Return to Work plans. I believe in the effectiveness of team work and can communicate easily with employees, employers, allied health professionals and physicians.
All the above services are supported by professionally written documentation that clearly outline issues/hazards, risks and prioritised recommendations in line with relevant legislation.
I am happy to have discussions with you by phone initially and then work out your priorities to improve Health and Safety in your organisation.
