Garth Gulley
Background
I have been involved in health and safety since 2007. Before that I ran an outdoor education centre, a business where safety management is an everyday reality. In 2007 I took on the newly created role of National Manager of Outdoor Safety and set about implementing a national auditing framework linked to current accepted practice. That led to my involvement in the development of a national auditing standard, ISO standards and co-writing a book for ISO on safety management systems.
Moving to WorkSafe New Zealand as an Industry Advisor, then Safety Star Rating Assessor, broadened my horizons and introduced me to a vast range of sectors and businesses. Being part of the development of the Safety Star Rating Scheme - which later became SafePlus - provided me with a sound foundation on what 'good' looks like and what really matters when assessing health and safety performance and maturity.
I then spent five years at KPMG helping organisations with the design and implementation of systems, frameworks, and tools. In that time, I have completed many SafePlus assessments. My goal was to keep things simple, relevant, and useful.
Now at Te Pūkenga I am working on developing a comprehensive and coherent wellbeing and safety management system for the vocational education sector.
