I've been involved in health and safety since 2007. Before that I ran an outdoor education centre, a business where safety management is an everyday reality. In 2007 I took on the newly-created role of national manager of outdoor safety and set about implementing a national auditing framework linked to current accepted practice. That led to my involvement in the development of a national auditing standard, ISO standards and co-writing a book for ISO on safety management systems.
Moving to WorkSafe New Zealand as an Industry Advisor, then Safety Star Rating Assessor, broadened my horizons and introduced me to a vast range of sectors and businesses. Being part of the development of the Safety Star Rating Scheme - which later became SafePlus - provided me with a sound foundation on what 'good' looks like and what really matters when assessing health and safety performance and maturity.
Something I strive to achieve is to look past the documentation and instead get the views of frontline workers, line managers and senior leaders. Hearing firsthand about what is working well, and what could be done better, gives me the information for reports that provide businesses with accurate, objective performance assessments and meaningful suggestions for improvement.
In addition to SafePlus and other performance assessments, I help businesses with the design and implementation of systems, frameworks and tools. My goal is to keep things simple, relevant and useful.
