Background

With a background in analytical chemistry, Barbara’s interest in the safety field developed in the mid 1980’s. Barbara has 30 years’ experience in health and safety working with clients from owner operator to large business and covering a broad range of industry; Construction, Manufacturing, Engineering, Food Processing , Education, Agriculture, Retail, Research, Electrical, Healthcare, Local and regional Council and Volunteer Groups.

During the 1990s I managed the implementation and maintenance of the Health and Safety ACC Partnership Programme (PP), Environment ISO 14001 and Quality Management Systems to ISO 9001 in an industrially based research environment.

Work in the research environment included; preparation of specific high risk safety procedures and permits for Flameproof Plant derate, Confined Space entry, Hot Work, and Cytotoxic Drug development.  Managing the Dangerous Goods Licence (100,000 litres of Class 3A and associated hazardous substances).  Carrying out 1000+ Work station assessments and assisting staff on reduced hours return to work rehabilitation programmes. Working with site staff and contractors during routine maintenance and annual upgrade of facilities (average cost $1 million a year).

Other work has included coordinating health and safety management of contractors and staff during a $13 million plant upgrade during production and working on residential and light commercial construction sites over 18 years.

Delivering NZQA Health and Safety unit standards training up to Level 4. I have also been involved in development and moderation of Compliance Courses in Height, Confined Space, Permit and Industrial BA as well as a range of Drug Screening and Management courses.

I have been a member of NZISM since the late 80’s and a Graduate of NZISM since 2010.

I enjoy assisting business assessing their operational scope and context, and updating and implementing health and safety systems and risk assessments. Carrying out health and safety audits, and providing mentoring support to Managers and staff. I also enjoy delivering health and safety training to suit business requirements.
