Background

I've been consulting for the past 15 years after a long and successful career as a health and safety regulator in the UK and in NZ since 2004. Clients are typically large public and private sector organisations across most industries.

My particular area of interest/expertise is diagnosis -what's working well or in need of improvement and why, what's gone wrong and how can we learn from it? I'm not really an implementer although I work with others to develop strategic and implementation plans and to evaluate effectiveness. I don't write manuals or sell systems. I am an accredited Safe+ assessor

The key role of governance in providing leadership in H&S was identified by the Taskforce (of which I was the only H&S professional member). I am an independent member of several governance groups in the public and private sector and work with the IoD and directly with clients to develop governance skills. I provide contestable advice to the board and senior executives as part of their assurance role through targeted reviews and investigations and act as an independent advisor. Over the past 7 years I have delivered the IoD Advanced Health and Safety Governance Programme and IoD/Government Health and Safety Lead Officer Development Programme to around 500 directors and senior executives.

I have provided expert witness advice for prosecution and defence in H&S cases as well as in related areas such as employment matters, civil/insurance claims and ACC.

I also have a particular interest in major capital project management and asbestos.

As Chair of the NZISM's Board I am a strong believer in high professional standards and continuous professional development for those in our industry.
