Employee

Background

Kerry has been involved in occupational health and hygiene for over 10 years. He is a Full Member of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) and New Zealand Occupational Hygienist Society (NZOHS). He's also a Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH) and a Councillor of the NZOHS.

After completing his bachelor of medical laboratory science, he has been involved in and carried out government-funded research projects looking at workplace exposures and health effects in joiners, furniture makers, sawmill workers, cleaners, slaughterhouses, and collision repair workers. Most notably, his project in using real-time video exposure monitoring to evaluate the different types of controls on wood dust exposure showed that simple, cost-effective interventions can be implemented in many small New Zealand joineries and be effective in complying with workplace exposure standards. Throughout his time at the Centre for Public Health Research, Massey University, he completed a diploma in occupational health and safety and a postgraduate diploma in public health.

Thereafter, Kerry worked in Canada applying occupational hygiene advice in the healthcare sector for the Interior Health Authority and Northern Health Authority.

Upon his return to New Zealand, Kerry started and headed the occupational hygiene division at SGS – a multinational testing, certification and verification company. He carried out various consulting projects for different industries throughout New Zealand and was the Regional Occupational Hygienist for the Asia-Pacific region of SGS.

Currently, Kerry is a Technical Specialist (Work-Related Health) at WorkSafe New Zealand, where he enjoys applying his skills and knowledge from his multidisciplinary background to improve work-related health outcomes in New Zealand through good health risk management.

At the same time, Kerry is undertaking his Masters in Work Health and Safety (Occupational Hygiene specialisation) at the University of Wollongong.
