Kathy Cardiff
Background
I am a Health & Safety professional with a foundation of 25-plus years as a hands-on licensed aircraft engineer with heavy maintenance, overhaul, modification and aircraft interior safety specialist experience within commercial air transport and rotor wing operations.
I have gained knowledge and competency over a wide range of sectors, including not-for-profit, road and transport, steel production, metals recovery, landfill operations, civil construction, rail construction and operations, landscape, horticulture and agriculture.
With a deep understanding in most things mechanical, my expertise covers writing documents to support establishing a safety management system, including policies, safe operations procedures and manuals; compiling risk registers and conducting assessments, production of task-appropriate JSEAs; to performing hazard identification and management, auditing, and presenting training.
As the first female aircraft engineering apprentice in New Zealand, safety was ingrained from the get-go. It took time for the safety practices I accepted as everyday would too be adopted by other industries. These included the development and application of health and safety systems in response to legislative changes brought about by significant events in New Zealand's workplace safety history.
Safety isn't hard, it just takes time to create the kind of environment where workers do not feel threatened by jargon and mindless rules, but feel supported and encouraged by management to make the everyday extraordinary. A little belief goes a long way!
I work with businesses of all sizes to provide products tailored for their unique needs.
